SUNDAY SCHOOL SPECIAL 4 SEPTEMBER 2022
Text: John 14:22-24
Subject: “If anyone loves Me” John 14:23

INTRODUCTION

1. The focus on Love was a very strong one

a) Love among brethren (John 13:34-35)
b) Love for the Lord Jesus (John 14:19-21)

2. Further Emphasis on Love for the Lord Jesus

a) This was taught further
b) The significance must not be lost

THE MANIFESTATION OF THE LORD JESUS

He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.
(John 14:21)

1. The Lord Jesus was teaching the Disciples about loving Him

a) It should be most natural
b) He is the Saviour and Teacher (and more)
c) But loving the Lord must not be assumed

2. If there is genuine love for the Lord

a) It will be expressed by keeping His commandments
b) The Father and the Son would love this disciple
c) The Lord Jesus would manifest Himself to him

THE QUESTION OF JUDAS SON OF JAMES

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

John 14:22-24

1. Who is this Judas?

a) He is called Judas, son of James (Luke 6:16)
b) He is called Thaddeus (Mark 3:18)

2. He asked why the Lord would not manifest Himself to the world, but only to the disciples

3. The Reply of the Lord Jesus

a) The focus is on “Love”
b) Love for the Lord Jesus and the keeping of His word

4. The Love of the Father and the Son

a) Assurance of God’s love for the one who loves the Lord Jesus
b) This is a repeat of what the Lord had said (John 14:21)

5. Making a home

a) Father and Son will come to this disciple
b) They will make a home with him!

A SAD POSSIBILITY/ REALITY

1. No love for the Lord Jesus

2. No keeping of His word

THE WORD OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The Word the Disciples had been hearing

2. They are the Words of the Father

3. The Father had sent Him with His words

CONCLUSION

1. Can we speak of a genuine love for the Lord Jesus?

2. How do we regard the Words of the Lord?

3. Do we understand the Promises of the Lord?

a) Manifestation (John 14:21)
b) Making a home with those who love the Lord (John 14:23)
