Being Alerted To The Danger Of Returning To Darkness

The danger of returning to darkness is far more probable than we realise. The apostle Paul, with an enlightened heart and mind, wrote to the Ephesian Church about how they should not allow themselves to go back to fellowshipping with darkness.

“For you were once darkness”
Ephesians 5:8

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness”
Ephesians 5:11

Paul reminded the Church at Ephesus how they were once living in darkness. They were walking according to the course of the world and according to the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2). This evil one worked in their hearts to disobey the Lord and His word. And now that they are light in the Lord, they were strongly exhorted to no longer walk as the Gentiles walk (Ephesians 4:17), in the futility of their mind and having their understanding darkened. They were not meant to be partakers with the unfruitful works of darkness, doing things that were too shameful to even talk about. Young people, let’s be on the alert that we do not return to darkness but instead seek to walk in the light.

Deep Appreciation Of Being Light

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:8

What is the reason for us to not return to darkness? The reason is simple. We are no longer darkness but light in the Lord. If we are light, then let’s be light. Why should we go back to being darkness? It is indeed a great privilege to be light in the Lord. It is through the person of the Lord Jesus that light comes to our soul. We were once dead spiritually but now, we are alive spiritually because the light has shone in our hearts through the Lord’s mercies (2 Corinthians 4:6). The Lord Jesus is the One who is the giver of light (Ephesians 5:14). In Him was life and the life was the light of men (John 1:4). It is in the sphere of the Lord Jesus and through the life that He gives that that we have become light. Truly, this is a great privilege for us to appreciate and give thanks. There is a strong contrast between the past and the present. We are no longer darkness but light.

“You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.”
1 Thessalonians 5:5

We are sons of the light and sons of the day. Let’s be on the alert and not be sleeping spiritually. We should be watching for the day of the Lord that will come as a thief in the night. Since we are light in the Lord, then we must walk as loving children of light.

Adherence To Walking As Children Of Light

“Walk as children of light”
Ephesians 5:8

Our challenge is to be the kind of children that God desires us to be. We are meant to be children who are characterised by light. We are meant to follow the Lord Jesus because He is the source of light in this world (John 8:12). If we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. God is our Father and we are meant to be imitators of Him as dear children should (Ephesians 5:1). Our hearts would seek to love the Lord and to find out what is acceptable to Him. Because He is our Father, we would want to do that which is well-pleasing to Him. We seek to reflect light as He is light. Young people, let’s seek to walk worthy as children of light.
