THE LORD GOD REIGNS

The Rebellion Of Man Against God And The Lord Jesus

From a historical perspective, man has always sought to rebel against God. Since the time man sinned against Him in the Garden of Eden till today, mankind has foolishly sought to disobey Him. In the text of Psalm 2, the Psalmist observed how earthly rulers “take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed” (Psalm 2:2). The “Anointed” is a reference to the Lord Jesus. The Psalmist explained how many were involved in resisting Him. Their desire was to break away from God’s bonds. They were seeking to be masters of their own lives. How sadly mistaken they were!

The Picture Of A Heavenly Sovereign God

“He who sits in the heavens shall laugh”
Psalm 2:4

No matter what, God will always be sovereign over all creatures and all things. The writer painted for his readers the picture of a powerful and almighty God sitting on His throne. As God sees the puny, silly and useless efforts of the rebellious people, He laughs at them. He mocks them. People may reject His word and attempt to set God aside. But they will fail. They will be dealt with. The Lord God is sovereign.

A Future Glimpse Of God Setting His Son As King On Earth

“‘Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.’
I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.'”

Psalm 2:6-7

Furthermore, God will establish His Son as the reigning King over Zion and all nations on earth. These verses are a reference to God’s Son as the Messianic King. There is the affirmation that the only begotten Son of God will govern over all. The nations of the world will be delivered to the Lord Jesus at His mere request. The wicked will be judged and punished. The sovereignty of the Lord Jesus will be established on earth.

Wise Submission To The Sovereign Lord

“Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way …
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.”

Psalm 2:10-12

David’s call was for non-believers to be wise and be instructed. They were to consider the Lord God as One who reigns over all. They were to learn to fear the Lord and to submit to Him. The phrase “kiss the Son” has the idea of the kiss of submission and obeisance before a king. If we do not “kiss’ the Son that will mean non-submission and He will have to deal with us sternly. On the other hand, He seeks to bless those who trust in Him. If we have not come to submit to Him, maybe it is time we should.
