Living In A Dry And Thirsty Land

We may say that we live in a spiritual desert. In this world, the reality of “dryness” within our soul is a common quandary. When we go through the challenges and problems of life, more often than not, we find our soul becoming spiritually parched. When we wake up in the morning, that soul’s aridness is still there. The Psalmist recognised this dilemma when he woke up each morning. He was going through a time when people were seeking his life. He saw how the world was a “dry and thirsty land where there (was) no water” (Psalm 63:1). Young people, do you wake up each morning feeling spiritually dehydrated? Let’s seek to deal with this problem.

Having A Spiritual Thirst For God

“O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You”

Psalm 63:1

The Psalmist recognised the Lord as his God. So, when his soul was dry, David found a natural longing to be with Him. His soul thirst led him to seek for the living God. Early in the morning, he would rise up longing after the Lord. He realised that nobody else could meet the needs of the soul except the Lord. Only He could quench his spiritual thirst. Let’s also learn to seek Him at the start of each day to meet our spiritual needs.

Learning About God And His Attributes

“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.”

Psalm 63:2

The Psalmist also sought the Lord that he might discover Him and His many wonderful attributes. He wanted to understand more about the power of the Lord and how glorious He was. As David looked for the Lord, he also learnt how God’s lovingkindness was of far greater worth than life itself (Psalm 63:3). God’s love became so much more precious and real to him. He found great joy as he sought the Lord.

Praising The Lord With Joy

“My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips.”

Psalm 63:5

When David got up early to seek the Lord, his soul was deeply satisfied. He likened his soul to a person who seems to have strong and healthy marrows and is healthy looking with strong flesh. Being with the Lord and reading His word brings spiritual nourishment and health to our spirit. It revitalises our soul and causes us to give praise to Him. As we seek the Lord each day, let’s also seek to praise Him with a deep sense of joy.
