Struggling With Feelings Of Wanting To Run Away From Our Problems

What is our first reaction whenever we are faced with the mounting stresses and difficulties of life? It is not uncommon for us to feel like giving in to the option of fleeing from them. When the Psalmist was faced with the stress of wicked people seeking to plot his downfall, they taunted him.

“How can you say to my soul,
‘Flee as a bird to your mountain’?
For look! The wicked bend their bow”

Psalm 11:1

David struggled with this taunt to fly away like a bird to a secure place, high up in the mountain. The wicked were portrayed as hunters ready to shoot down the righteous like a bird with an arrow. Young people, have you ever felt like running away from the challenges of life? The Psalmist’s answer to this taunt was not to flee but to trust in God instead.

Learning To Place Our Full Trust In God

“In the Lord I put my trust”
Psalm 11:1

The Psalmist sought to place his full trust in the Lord.

1. Trusting In The Lord’s Reign In Our Life

“The Lord is in His holy temple,
The Lord’s throne is in heaven;
His eyes behold,
His eyelids test the sons of men.
The Lord tests the righteous”

Psalm 11:4-5

The Lord is seen as sitting on His heavenly throne and He rules with great holiness. There is nothing that happens on this earth that escapes His eye. In the text of Psalm 2:4, the Lord God sits on His throne and laughs at the puny attempts of nations to rebel against Him. God is omniscient. As He observes the sons of men, the Lord also seeks to test all men. He would especially test the righteous that they may grow further and be approved by Him. Young people, let’s learn to trust in the great sovereignty of God. In His great wisdom, He tests and refines the hearts of the righteous for our good. Let’s not be afraid of the testing of life and let’s trust in the Lord’s sovereign hand in our life.

2. Trusting In The Lord’s Righteousness

“But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.”
Psalm 11:5

“For the Lord is righteous,
He loves righteousness;
His countenance beholds the upright.”

Psalm 11:7

The Psalmist also learned to trust in the Lord’s righteousness. He saw how the Lord God was One who hated unrighteousness and violence. The Lord would bring judgment on those who commit wickedness. But on the other hand, the Lord God is by nature righteous and thus, He loves those who walk in righteousness. His countenance is always focused on the righteous. He looks out for them and seeks to show His favour and give His blessing to them. Our part is to fully trust in the righteousness of God. Let’s trust that God will indeed bless as we walk in uprightness.
