Loving The Scriptures More Any Physical Treasure

What is the worth of the word of God? According to the Psalmist, it is something that should be loved far more than gold.

“Therefore I love Your commandments
More than gold, yes, than fine gold!”

Psalm 119:127

Gold has different grades. After going through the smelting process, the best kind of grade is fine gold. For the Psalmist, he loved God’s word far more than fine gold. He loved it more than any earthly treasure. He personally had experienced how wonderful the word of God is. Young people, we should seek to love the word of God far more than any material thing on this earth. How did the Psalmist come to love God’s word in such a way?

1. Seeking Understanding From The Scriptures In Times Of Need

“Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy,
And teach me Your statutes.
I am Your servant;
Give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies”

Psalm 119:124-125

The Psalmist was going through a most difficult period of time. He was being oppressed by his enemies. The Psalmist sought the Lord especially for understanding from the Scriptures. He sought the Lord as His teacher … to open up his understanding so that he could comprehend His word. The word of God gives us understanding and wisdom to deal with the stressful problems of life. The Psalmist humbly pleaded with the Lord because he saw himself as only a servant. As he prayed, he found understanding.

2. Seeing The Truth Of God’s Word

“Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things
I consider to be right;
I hate every false way.”

Psalm 119:128

The Psalmist also saw how true the word of God was. As he read and meditated on the word of God, he recognised that everything that he read was most accurate and right. He was able to contrast it with the false ways of his oppressors. He saw how amazing the ways of the Lord were. Everything that he came across in the Scriptures was considered to be right. All of it was based on truth. When we see and experience the worth of God’s word, we will love and treasure it.

THE CHALLENGE TO LOVE THE WORD OF GOD

Let’s be challenged to love the Scriptures as the Psalmist did. The holidays are already here for some of you. Let’s take the time to read the Scriptures and know them well. Let’s pray that God will give us understanding from the Scriptures. May we learn to love the Lord’s word more than fine gold.
