Having Strong Sense Of Urgency In Seeking God Early

As we face life, seeking the Lord early in the morning should be our daily spiritual discipline. Before we start the day, we should learn to spend time with our Lord and to seek Him with meditation and prayer. The Psalmist possessed this tremendous sense of urgency to want to commune with the Lord at the crack of dawn.

“O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You”

Psalm 63:1

There was this strong desire and determination to focus on Him, to rise early and to diligently seek Him. The Psalmist recognised God as his own personal God. His soul was thirsting after the Lord. There was a sense of earnest longing to be with Him in the morning. The Lord Jesus also sought God a long while before daylight, finding a solitary place so that He could pray (Mark 1:35). This was something He sought to do morning by morning (Isaiah 50:4). Young people, let’s also recognise God as our God and our need for Him on a daily basis. Let’s make meeting with Him the foremost special event of each day. Meeting with our God and communing with Him takes time and diligence. Let’s find a greater sense of urgency in seeking the Lord each morning.

Powerful Reasons For Strength Of Urgency

1. Dealing With Spiritual Dryness

“My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You

In a dry and thirty land

Where there is no water.”

Psalm 63:1

David compared his spiritual dryness to the dryness of the wilderness. He was hiding in the wilderness of Judah from his enemies and there was no water readily available. It was this dryness of his soul that drove him to pray and to be with the Lord. David was a spent force at this point of time. He was totally exhausted from his running away from enemies. It was hard for him to even find a refreshing stream to drink from. Studying and working hard in this world is like a wilderness that extracts whatever life we have from us. There is absolutely no source of “water” in the world to quench our spiritual thirst. When we go through each day and have expended our energy, this sense of dryness that we feel should cause us to have a deep sense of urgency in seeking the Lord the next day. As a deer pants for the water, so we must also long for the living God (Psalm 42:1-2). Soul dryness should drive us to pray and to seek the Lord each morning.

2. Discovery Of God’s Power And Glory

“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.”

Psalm 63:2

Another powerful reason was for David to look for God and to discover His great power and glory. David was able to see beyond his predicament to look for Him in the sanctuary. The word “sanctuary” can be a reference to the tabernacle on earth or a reference to heaven. It can also refer to any place where the presence of the Lord is. David was in the midst of a difficult experience and he was searching for God. He was looking for God in the sanctuary to behold God’s great power. He realized that he needed the power of God to quench his spiritual dryness. It took nothing less than His power to bring about the quenching of the thirst of his soul. David also wanted to behold the glory of the Lord. When we see God’s power, we also see His glory. Discovery of God and His power and glory feeds our soul. Young people, let’s seek the Lord with a greater sense of urgency. We need His power to quench our spiritual thirst. Let’s be challenged to seek Him early in the morning. Let’s seek to behold His power and to stand in awe of His great glory.
