Defending Ourselves Against The Darkness

There are two realms that have existed through the centuries. They are the realms of light and darkness. In a simple nutshell, light represents everything that belongs to God. Darkness represents everything that belongs to Satan. The evil one has always been waging a spiritual war against the children of God. He will attack our faith through false teachings. He wants people to think that there is no such thing as sin. He desires people to set aside the commandments of God. He deceives people into denying Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. He will do all he can to lead us away from God. It is imperative that we seek to guard and defend our faith well.

Defending Our Faith By Proclaiming The Truth

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
1 John 1:5

One of the ways to defend the faith is to know the truth and to proclaim it. John had been taught much by the Lord from the Scriptures. He was deeply impacted by the truths he had learnt. Consequently, he sought to proclaim them. The Apostle John presented the fundamental truth that God is light. He is truly good and holy in contrast to Satan who is evil and sinful. There is no possibility of “darkness” existing in God at all. One of the best ways to defend ourselves is to proclaim truth. The truth of God’s word would prevail.

The Correction Of False Teachings

There were false teachers in the days of the apostles who claimed that Christians could believe in God and still live in sin. This was obviously a false teaching.

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
1 John 1:6

It is easy for Christians to profess faith in the Lord Jesus and yet walk in sin. A true Christian will seek to walk in the light. He will not habitually walk in darkness.

“But if we walk in the Light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7

Our lives become so much more tied in to the character of God. Because God is light, we must also walk in the light of His truths. Then, we can have good fellowship with one another. John sought to correct wrong applications of God’s truth. He sought to ensure that the early Christians practised their faith correctly. It is important that we defend our faith from all kinds of false teachings. Let’s stand on the truths of God’s word and seek to apply them correctly.
