The involvement of the Holy Spirit

As we re-appreciate the salvation that the Lord Jesus came to earth to give, let us also understand the role of the Holy Spirit. We see the appearance of God’s kindness, love and mercy in the birth and life of the Lord Jesus Christ…all that He did on the cross for us (Titus 3:4–5). Through Christ, the Spirit of God does a special work in our lives.

Paul wrote to Titus, “Through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” (Titus 3:5–6) How should we understand the work of the Spirit of God?

Regeneration of the Holy Spirit

“The washing of regeneration…” (Titus 3:5)

  1. The first work of the Holy Spirit is regeneration…to be born again.
  2. Cleansing
    1. There is a need for washing, to be bathed spiritually and cleansed.
    2. The Holy Spirit does a deep cleansing of the sins in our lives.
    3. Paul highlighted the past sins that he had been cleansed of…“For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.” (Titus 3:3)
    4. We should no longer be drawn to these sins.
  3. Regeneration (palingenesia)
    1. As we are cleansed, we are also regenerated…being born again spiritually.
    2. The Lord Jesus taught that unless we are born again, we cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3).
    3. We are also to be born of water and the Spirit…to find salvation and enter the kingdom.
    4. We are given new, spiritual life as the Spirit of God works in us.
    5. The Holy Spirit will cleanse and regenerate us.

Renewal of the Holy Spirit

  1. The second work of the Holy Spirit is renewal.
  2. The word “renewal” (anakainōsis) means to be made new.
    1. The Spirit of God gives new life.
    2. He makes us come alive.
    3. The renewal of the Spirit restores spiritual vitality and life in us.
  3. The problem is that many stop at the first work.
    1. Thus, they often get worn out by the challenges of life at work and home.
    2. We are weary and tired out.
  4. The Lord seeks to pour out His Spirit abundantly.
    1. His outpouring is meant to be done richly…vigorously.
    2. The Spirit will renew and bring new and vibrant life in us.

Seek the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

No matter what we are going through, such as work difficulties or the loss of a job, the outpouring of the Spirit gives us the life and strength to overcome them. Let us ensure that the Spirit of God has regenerated us…that we are born again. Let us also find renewal in the special work of the Holy Spirit…to help us come alive through His rich outpouring into our hearts this Christmas.
