Facing the challenges of life

  1. The year ahead may hold many difficulties for all.
  2. Unexpected problems and diverse trials may come our way.
  3. The Psalmist David had to face his share of personal challenges.
  4. King Saul hated him and unrelentingly sought to kill him.
  5. David had to flee for his life…a time of great “calamity” for him (Psalm 57:1).
  6. But he sought to turn to the Lord for His mercies.

The plea for the mercy of the Lord

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!” (Psalm 57:1)

  1. David cried out to the Lord for His mercy twice.
  2. It was an intense plea and not just a casual prayer.
  3. David felt a deep need for the Lord’s mercy to be given to him.
  4. Being a merciful God, He would provide His mercy accordingly.
  5. This was the best approach to take in facing the challenges of life.

Trusting in the Lord’s mercies

  1. David had a personal trust in the Lord (Psalm 57:1).
  2. His trust was something that came from his soul.
  3. David’s faith in God caused him not only to hope but also to trust in Him.
  4. His personal trust in the Lord was dependent on his knowledge of God.
  5. He was able to see the Lord’s mercy displayed in all His works.

The protection of the Lord

“And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by.” (Psalm 57:1)

  1. The large wings of an eagle would cast a great shadow on its eaglets.
  2. The eaglets would know that their mother was watching over and protecting them.
  3. David sought to take refuge in God, under the shadow of His wings, safe in His protection.
  4. He would protect him out of His mercy.
  5. His protection would last throughout the challenges of life.

The answer of the Lord’s deliverance (Psalm 57:2,3)

  1. As an answer to David’s plea, the Lord will perform all things for him.
  2. He will send help from heaven to save (deliver).
  3. The Lord will send forth His mercy and truth…in His deliverance.
  4. Our trust in the Lord should cause us to look to Him for His answer.

The abundance of mercy and the truth of the Lord

“For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, and Your truth unto the clouds.” (Psalm 57:10)

  1. The mercy of God is truly in great abundance.
  2. His mercies are so great that they are described as extending to the heavens.
  3. His truth is also so abundant that it reaches the clouds.
  4. It is from the Lord’s great mercies and truth that God hears and delivers us.
  5. Let us plead for the Lord’s mercies when we are face the challenges of life.
  6. Let us exalt the Lord and give him glory for His abundant mercies and truth.

Let us seek the Lord and His mercies as we face the challenges of the year ahead.
