The Lord’s blessings

I would like to wish everyone “A Blessed and Happy Lunar New Year!” As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, let us make time to remember all the blessings that God has showered upon our lives. He has lovingly and graciously given us much. Yet, there is grave danger when we forget that we have been richly blessed.

Reasons for forgetting the Lord’s blessings

1. Forgetting God

  1. We can be busy with the activities of life that we forget to include Him in our lives.
  2. The distractions of the world draw our attention away from God.

2. Taking God and His blessings for granted

  1. We assume that God will always bless us.
  2. We do not appreciate Him as we ought to.

3. No longer close to God

  1. A lack of appreciation reveals much about our heart.
  2. Our hearts may have grown cold and distant from God.

“Forget not all His benefits”

David wrote a Psalm to express his deep and personal appreciation of God’s blessings. He sought to provide a list of God’s benefits (blessings) in his life (Psalm 103:2).

1. The Lord forgives all our iniquities (Psalm 103:3)

  1. Iniquities refer to the evil that lies in our hearts.
  2. The Lord mercifully gives us His forgiveness of our iniquities when we repent.

2. He heals our diseases (Psalm 103:3)

  1. Whether through COVID or other illnesses, our health may have been affected.
  2. Some may have succumbed to their illnesses and it takes faith for loved ones to cope.
  3. Yet, for those whom the Lord has graciously healed, there ought to be thankfulness.

3. He redeems our life from destruction (Psalm 103:4)

  1. Understanding the frailty of life, we recognise how easily our lives can be destroyed.
  2. Again, much faith is needed to cope with the destruction of life.
  3. Yet, the Lord does spare and redeem…we ought to be thankful.

4. He crowns our life with His lovingkindness and tender mercies (Psalm 103:4)

  1. God’s lovingkindness has been manifested in what He has done for us.
  2. His mercies have been abundantly displayed in our lives throughout the year.

5. He satisfies us with good things (Psalm 103:5)

  1. The Lord has lovingly provided for our needs, such as good food.
  2. Such blessings that we share with family and friends should not be taken for granted.

6. He renews and refreshes our life like a youth (Psalm 103:5)

  1. Youth often reflects strength and exuberance…just like an eagle flying majestically.
  2. We can enjoy renewed strength through good things such as food and health.
  3. Let us celebrate by appreciating the good things in life and be greatly refreshed.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul” (Psalm 103:1,2)

  1. Blessing the Lord is to express gratitude and thanks with a sense of joy.
  2. When there is a deep appreciation of the Lord’s blessing, we cannot but bless Him.
  3. Not only do we bless the Lord with our lips externally but also with our souls internally.
  4. Let us be challenged to bless the Lord with great joy as we celebrate the Lunar New Year.
