The Prayer For Enlightenment

A prayer for another year of ministry

As Bethany enters her 53rd year of ministry, what is it that we want to pray for? Another year of ministry is not just a matter of planning activities for the different areas of ministry. There is a need for us to delve deeper into the Lord’s Word…to gain wisdom, insights and understanding to better minister in the year ahead. I find myself recognising the need for enlightenment from the Word of God to grow more spiritually in life and faith…to be more effective in ministry.

The Apostle Paul prayed a vital prayer for the Ephesian church in Ephesians 1. He thanked God who had blessed them with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). He heard of their faith and love for all the saints (Ephesians 1:15). But Paul had the insight to know that the brethren were still lacking enlightenment and he prayed with this focus in mind.

1. The involvement of the Spirit of God

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,” (Ephesians 1:17)

  1. Paul recognised the need to pray for the involvement of the Spirit of God.
  2. It is the Spirit of God who can give us enlightenment.
  3. He is described as the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.
  4. Through the Spirit, we can discover deeper wisdom from God.
  5. Through Him, God will reveal more profound truths for us to discover.
  6. The Spirit does this in the knowledge of God…that we may grow our understanding of Him through His Word.
  7. Let us be conscious to pray for the Spirit of God to be greatly involved.

 2. The enlightenment of the Spirit of God

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know…” (Ephesians 1:18)

  1. The word “understanding” in Greek is “kardia” which means “heart”.
  2. The Spirit opens the eyes of the heart to understand.
  3. The enlightenment of the Spirit gives understanding not only to the mind but also to the heart.
  4. Greater light is given for us to understand the Word of God…to reach greater depths.
  5. Once we have been enlightened, then we will be able to know things with greater clarity.
  6. We can better understand our ministries, their needs and how to minister effectively.
  7. Let us pray for this greater enlightenment of the Holy Spirit for our life and ministry.

3. Enlightenment to minister

As we enter our 53rd year of ministry, we recognise our need for the Spirit of God to enlighten us with understanding and depth so that we can serve better. I appreciate how the Spirit has enlightened Pastor Charles to understand the needs of our brethren for the year ahead and determine what the focus of our different ministries should be.

For our Morning Worship, the theme is “Men Always Ought to Pray”. We begin the year with a focus on prayer…to learn from the example of the Lord Jesus in how He prayed and sought the Spirit’s leading. At year’s end, the theme of the Youth Conference is about being reconciled with God. Many of our youths are worshipping and serving in church, but they may not be reconciled with God.

Let us be challenged to pray for the Spirit of God to enlighten us with the Lord’s Word so that we may serve Him and our brethren more effectively in the coming year.
