The Lord Is Near

An uplifting word

When we go through life’s challenges, we may erroneously feel that God has distanced Himself from us. Such negative feelings should be guarded against. David gave a proper understanding of God, that His presence is near us, with us. He wrote, “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18) This is an encouraging and uplifting assurance. The Lord is indeed near to us. When we pray to Him, we seek to draw near Him. In turn, the Lord would also be near to us.

The Lord will be near us

How do we know that the Lord is truly near us when we call upon Him? The Lord’s involvement is evident when He is near us.

1. The Lord will uphold and raise us (Psalm 145:14)

a. There will be moments when we may fall in our way and feel down.
b. The Lord will uphold us through those low moments and raise us from where we are.

2. The Lord will provide for us (Psalm 145:15)

a. We look expectantly to the Lord to provide for our every need.
b. He will open His hand and satisfy every living thing (Psalm 145:16).

3. The Lord will answer our prayers (Psalm 145:19)

a. God knows all our desires and will fulfil them accordingly, as we seek to fear Him.
b. We know that He is near…as He will hear our pleas and show us His deliverance.

4. The Lord will preserve us (Psalm 145:20)

a. He will specially preserve us from all danger.
b. His preservation will indicate His involvement in our lives…as we learn to love Him.

These are ways in which the Lord will indicate that He is near us.

Reasons for the Lord to be near us

Why does the Lord seek to be near us?

  1. It is the Lord’s desire and will to personally relate to us more closely.
  2. This is the kind of King that God is…who draws near to His people in His kingdom rather than to distance Himself (Psalm 145:1,18).
  3. He is a loving and gracious God who seeks to bless His people.

Let us understand and appreciate why the Lord seeks to be near to us.

Calling out to the Lord

Our part is to pray and call upon the Lord with His truth in mind, “To all who call upon Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18) God will be near to us if we have the truth of the Lord’s Word. There is a need for truth concerning who God is and what He does. To David, God showed Himself to be gracious, full of compassion, slow to anger and full of mercy (Psalm 145:8).

I thank God that He is indeed near us and that we need not fear anything that may come our way. There is no better place to be than for God to be near us. Let us pray to the Lord and draw near to Him in truth so that He would indeed be near us. Let us face each challenge by focusing on this beautiful truth…The Lord is near!
