A description of the house of wisdom

The author of Proverbs sought to portray wisdom as a person living in a house. What kind of house would wisdom be living in? It is described as a beautiful and magnificent house: “Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars” (Proverbs 9:1). Wisdom built her house with seven pillars to indicate magnificence.

The banquet wisdom prepared

“She has slaughtered her meat, she has mixed her wine, she has also furnished her table.” (Proverbs 9:2)

  1. Wisdom also prepared a sumptuous meal.
  2. It is a meal that is made up of the choicest food and drink.
  3. She had not held back in her preparation for the dining table.
  4. This reflects the kind of host that wisdom is.
  5. She provides the best for all her guests.
  6. Those who partake of this special meal will be blessed.

Invitation to dine in the house of wisdom

1. The sending of invitations

“She has sent out her maidens, she cries out from the highest places of the city,” (Proverbs 9:3)

  1. Wisdom sent out her maidens to give out invitations.
  2. To those in the highest places of the city.

2. All are invited

““Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,” (Proverbs 9:4)

  1. The servants called out to those who were “simple”.
  2. Those who lacked understanding were also invited.
  3. This would indicate that anyone and everyone is invited.
  4. All may come to the house of wisdom.
  5. All of us should accept the invitation to go to the house of wisdom.

Partaking of the food of wisdom

“Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.” (Proverbs 9:5)

  1. Wisdom, as a gracious host, welcomes all to partake of her food and drink.
  2. The challenge is for us to partake of the food of wisdom.
  3. The food will feed our mind and soul.
  4. It would give us nourishment and strength in our lives.
  5. There would come prudence and understanding.

Practical steps to grow in wisdom

“Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.” (Proverbs 9:6)

When we partake of the food of wisdom, we would have the discernment to forsake those things that are foolish. We would be able to live our lives far more wisely and prudently. There would be special blessings in our lives and ministries as we are spiritually nourished and strengthened. Let us be challenged to go to the house of wisdom and feast on the richly furnished table. Let us be challenged to go the way of understanding and not remain in simplicity. Let us find greater wisdom and prudence to live a rich and vibrant life.
