Entering 2020

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed and Happy New Year! It is indeed exciting to start a new year. There is so much to look forward to. Yet, we recognise that there are many challenges that we would have to face in the year ahead.

The message that Pastor Charles gave on Down Memory Lane was a most appropriate word for 2020. I was deeply challenged by the words of David, “Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore!” (1 Chron 16:11) As part of his call to give thanks and worship to the Lord, David also made a call for all to seek Him.

1. Seeking the face of the Lord

What does it mean to seek the face of the Lord? It is to bring God into the picture in all that we do. As much as we seek to make plans for 2020, we want to seek God first. We want to involve God into our planning. By seeking God, we are adding Him into the equation of our life, of our plans. When we seek the face of the Lord in prayer, we are conscious of who He is. We are focused on being in the presence of the Lord. He is the One who would show us the way, to lead and guide us.

The problem with many of us is that we have made plans for our life, work and family. But we have not sought the Lord as we should.

The Lord Jesus Himself also taught His disciples to seek God first, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt 6:33) When we seek the Lord and His kingdom first, the Lord would surely bless our way. Let us be challenged to seek the Lord first and to involve Him in our plans.

2. Finding strength in the Lord

As we seek the Lord, we also want to seek in particular strength for the year.

a. Personal strength

Each one of us has personal strength. It is our responsibility to build our strength. Whether it is physical strength or strength of spirit, it is something that we have to develop as we do our part. Yet, is it possible to increase our strength beyond ourselves? The answer is “Yes”.

b. Divine strength

It is in seeking the Lord that we can find greater strength. It is being in the place of God, to seek His face that we are strengthened. All that God is can help strengthen us. He is our Lord, and He has done great and marvellous things. God would certainly give us the power to strengthen us. He would provide us with enough strength to face the challenges of the new year. It is this divine strength from God that empowers us to go beyond ourselves. Let us be challenged to seek the Lord and His strength.

3. Seeking the Lord always

Our seeking of the Lord should not be just at the beginning of the year. Seeking the Lord must become part and parcel of our life so that we can find strength for the whole year. There should be greater consistency in the way we seek the Lord. Let us be challenged to make the seeking of the face of the Lord and His strength a personal commitment for 2020.
