Celebrating our National Day

As we celebrate our country’s 60th birthday, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of pride and joy in being a Singaporean. I count myself privileged to be a citizen of this wonderful nation that all of us call “home”. My heart is full of thanksgiving as I think about how the Lord has blessed our country in so many ways. We should count ourselves incredibly blessed and we should never take any of these blessings for granted. Let us offer words of thanksgiving as we consider some of the blessings we have experienced in Singapore (1 Timothy 2:1).

A deep heart of gratitude for our leaders and country

1. A strong and stable government

  1. We thank God for our founding fathers, who set the right direction for our government.
  2. Today, we have a good, strong and stable government to lead our country.
  3. With such leadership, our country has been able to make good progress and maintain unity.
  4. As we observe how corruption and disunity in governments have adversely affected other nations, we do not want to take our leaders for granted.
  5. Let us be thankful for those whom God has appointed as His ministers (Romans 13:4).

2. Strict and necessary laws

  1. We thank God for the kinds of law we have in our country.
  2. While some may criticise us for being too strict, we have the wisdom to recognise the need for such laws to ensure the safety of our citizens.
  3. Our government is not afraid to do what is necessary…“An avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” (Romans 13:4)
  4. For instance, with the problem of vaping worsening, the government is seeking to do what is required to protect our people, especially our children and youths.

3. Lasting peace

  1. This is something that we should be thankful for and not take for granted.
  2. As we consider the recent war that broke out between two neighbouring countries, we recognise how fragile our peace can be.
  3. Tensions can intensify overnight and we can be at war.
  4. We thank God for the lasting peace that we have enjoyed over all the years.
  5. The need for a good defence is vital to ensure peace.
  6. Let us never take for granted that we can live a quiet and peaceable life (1 Timothy 2:2).

 4. Divine and natural protection

  1. Our country has been well-protected naturally as an island.
  2. We are protected from the various natural disasters that other countries are experiencing.
  3. Yet, we recognise that ultimately it is the Lord who protects us through His grace and mercy.

5. Progress

Over the past 60 years, Singapore has achieved significant progress from strength to strength. We have seen remarkable growth in our economy, education system, finance, infrastructure, technology, culture and more. We would not be where we are today without the Lord’s blessings throughout these years. Let us, with hearts full of thanksgiving, joy and praise, count our blessings as we celebrate our nation’s birthday. Let us pray for the Lord to continue granting wisdom to our leaders and to bless our country richly. Happy National Day
