Message: “The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD” Exodus 7:5

Text: Exodus 7:1-13

INTRODUCTION

1. Moses had to learn vital lessons about serving the LORD

2. The LORD would patiently teach him step by step how he could succeed in ministry

THE FIRST LESSON FOR MOSES

1 So the LORD said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

2 You shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land.

Exodus 7:1-2

1. Positioning Moses and Aaron

a) Moses would be “as God to Pharaoh”
b) Aaron would be his prophet

2. Relationship established

a) God would speak to Moses
b) Moses would relay the word to Aaron
c) Aaron would speak to the Pharaoh

3. Why was this done?

a) To answer Moses’ plea that he is unable to speak well
b) A learning process for Moses till he gains sufficient skill
c) The grace and patience of the Lord is remarkable

THE SECOND LESSON WAS THE REVELATION OF GOD’S PLAN

3 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.

4 But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

Exodus 7:3-5

1. What God would do

a) Concerning Pharaoh
i) He will harden his heart
ii) This is purposive
iii) Pharaoh had already demonstrated that he had a hardened heart
b) Concerning His work in Egypt
i) He will multiply signs and wonders in Egypt
ii) He will lay His hand on Egypt
iii) He will bring out His armies and His people out of Egypt
iv) He will display great judgment against Egypt

2. The Intended Results

a) The Egyptians will know
b) That He is the LORD
c) They will see His hand stretched out against Egypt when He delivers His people from the land

SUMMARY STATEMENT

6 Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as the LORD commanded them, so they did.

7 And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Exodus 7:6-7

1. Moses and Aaron obeyed the LORD

2. Age of Moses: 80 years old

3. Age of Aaron: 83 years old

THE SECOND ENCOUNTER WITH THE PHARAOH

8 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’”
10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the LORD commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
11 But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.
13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the LORD had said.

Exodus 7:8-13

1. Anticipating Pharaoh’s move
That he would ask for a miracle

2. Answer to Pharaoh

a) Moses instructed Aaron to cast down his rod
b) It became a serpent

3. Pharaoh’s response

a) He called his wise men, sorcerers and magicians
b) With their enchantments they also produced serpents

4. Aaron’s rod-serpent

a) It swallowed up the serpents of the Egyptian sorcerers
b) This was an amazing feat
c) It demonstrated the superior power of the LORD

5. Pharaoh’s response

a) His heart grew hard
b) He dd not heed Moses/ Aaron
c) But this time round, he did not add to the burdens of the children of Israel

CONCLUSION

1. Moses had not given up hope entirely

a) He fought against his own doubts and fears
c) He sought to apply his faith in the LORD

2. The LORD

a) His power was exercised
b) He was fulfilling what He had promised
