Message: “Arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran” Genesis 27:43

INTRODUCTION

1. Review the lessons learned

a) Mistakes
i) Of parents (Isaac and Rebekah)
ii) Of Siblings (Esau and Jacob)
b) Sins
i) Stealing
ii) Deception
iii) Lying
iv) Disdaining
v) Spiritual inertia

2. Results

a) Strained relationship made worse
b) Threat of violence
c) Contemplated murder

THE DANGER THAT EXISTED

1. Hatred

a) Esau hated Jacob Genesis 27:41a
b) Because Jacob had stolen his first-born blessing Genesis 27:41b

2. Heart

a) Plot conceived in the heart Genesis 27:41c
b) Plot to kill Jacob Genesis 27:41d

3. His words

“The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
Genesis 27:41

PLOT OF ESAU MADE KNOWN TO REBEKAH

1. The plot to kill Jacob became known

a) Perhaps to servants
b) Perhaps to friends

2. This plot was revealed to Rebekah

a) She would have kept tabs on Esau’s plans
b) She knew that Esau hated Jacob

ACTION TO BE TAKEN

1. Rebekah took action

2. She has to do this on her own

3. What she could not do:

a) She could not confide in Isaac
b) Her part in Jacob’s conspiracy would be suspected if not confirmed
c) She could not confront Esau
i) There may not be a closeness
ii) Esau was Isaac’s pet
iii) Jacob was Rebekah’s pet

4. What she could do

a) She had to save Jacob’s life
b) She had to come up with a plan very swiftly

5. Key things Missing

a) Seeking God in prayer
b) Seeking God’s mercy

A PLAN TO SAVE JACOB’S LIFE

1. Helping Jacob to understand the grave situation

a) Concerning Esau
Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.
Genesis 27:42
i) Esau is nursing his anger
ii) He is intending to kill Jacob
b) Plan suggested
43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran.
44 And stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away,
45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”
Genesis 27:43-45
i) Rebekah expects to be obeyed
ii) Jacob must arise and flee from home
iii) He is to go to Laban’s house and stay for a few days
c) Duration of the Stay
i) Until Esau’s fury turns away Genesis 27:45a
ii) Until his anger turns away from Jacob Genesis 27:45b
iii) Until he forgets what had been done to him Genesis 27:45c
d) Sending word
i) Rebekah would then send word to Jacob
ii) He can then return home safely

2. Reasoning behind this plan

Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?
Genesis 27:45d

a) Rebekah had believed that Isaac would die soon
b) She feared that Jacob would be killed soon after
c) She would be double bereaved then!

EXECUTING THE PLAN

And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
Genesis 27:46

1. Rebekah’s complaint

a) She is weary of her life
b) Because of the daughters in law
c) They are called “daughters of Heth”
d) Like the daughters of the land (Hittites/ Canaanites)

2. If Jacob marries

a) A daughter of Heth
b) What good can she hope to see in her life?

3. Rebekah had become deceptive and cunning
In her life!

CONCLUSION

1. In war

a) There is conflict
b) There is the aftermath of war

2. Where sin is perpetrated

a) There is Conflict
b) There is Confusion
c) There are Consequences that can be devastating
