Message: “I will be with your mouth and teach you” Exodus 4:12

Text: Exodus 4:1-12

INTRODUCTION

1. We worry about many things in life

a) Our ability to cope with life
b) Our fear of being overwhelmed

2. We also worry about how we may serve the Lord

a) We worry about being inadequate to serve successfully
b) We worry that we do not have enough knowledge or skills in speaking well

MORE FEARS OF MOSES EXPRESSED

Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’ ”

Exodus 4:1

1. Fear that no one would believe him

2. Fear of rejection from the people

3. These fears

a) They were real
b) They were deep-seated
c) They were difficult to overcome
d) Moses could not overcome his fears by himself
e) He would need divine help

GOD’S ANSWER TO THE WORRIES AND FEARS I

2 So the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
He said, “A rod.”

3 And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail” (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand),

5 “that they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

Exodus 4:2-5

1. God had to show Moses His power

2. Turning a harmless Rod into a Deadly serpent

3. God’s Power was shown

a) Undeniable
b) Unlimited
c) Surely, this must cause one to have faith in the LORD!

GOD’S ANSWER TO THE WORRIES AND FEARS II

6 Furthermore the LORD said to him, “Now put your hand in your bosom.” And he put his hand in his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, like snow.

7 And He said, “Put your hand in your bosom again.” So he put his hand in his bosom again, and drew it out of his bosom, and behold, it was restored like his other flesh.

8 “Then it will be, if they do not believe you, nor heed the message of the first sign, that they may believe the message of the latter sign.

Exodus 4:6-8

1. A normal hand becoming Leprous

2. A leprous hand healed and restored to normal

3. The hoped-for results:

a) That people may believe

b) Two mighty signs consecutively
c) This must surely help to increase faith

GOD’S ANSWER TO THE WORRIES AND FEARS III

8 “Then it will be, if they do not believe you, nor heed the message of the first sign, that they may believe the message of the latter sign.

9 And it shall be, if they do not believe even these two signs, or listen to your voice, that you shall take water from the river and pour it on the dry land. The water which you take from the river will become blood on the dry land.”

Exodus 4:8-9

1. A third sign was offered

2. Three signs would be performed by Moses consecutively

3. Surely, that would go a long way to establish faith in God

CONTINUED UNBELIEF IN THE HEART OF MOSES

Then Moses said to the LORD, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

Exodus 4:10

1. Moses protested

a) He was not eloquent
b) He was slow of speech and slow of tongue

 

2. Unbelief

a) This was very strong
b) Moses was unable to make progress

GOD’S FURTHER WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

11 So the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD?

12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”

Exodus 4:11-12

1. Moses’ fears were unfounded

2. God’s answers were more than sufficient to combat any fears

a) God is the Maker
b) He is the LORD of hosts
c) He would be there with Moses
d) God would help him all the way!

CONCLUSION

1. We need to fight the problem of unbelief

2. We need to exercise faith as a response to God’s word

3. Let’s learn how to discern and directly order the Lord’s commandments
