BATTLING THE SIN OF UNBELIEF

1. THE DEADLY SIN OF UNBELIEF

a) This was recognised by a number of Psalmists (Psalms 78; 95; 106)

b) The sin of unbelief was pinpointed by the writer of Hebrews (Hebrews 3:12, 19)

2. Features of Unbelief

a) Hardening of the heart                     Hebrews 3:8

b) Expressed in rebellion                      Hebrews 3:8

c) Testing of the Lord (defiance)         Hebrews 3:9

d) Going astray in the heart                  Hebrews 3:10

e) Ignorance of God’s ways                    Hebrews 3:10

f) An evil heart                                          Hebrews 3: 12

g) Departing from the Lord                   Hebrews 3:12

3. Battling unbelief effectively

a) Recognise the deadliness of sin        Hebrews 3:13

i) It is deceitful                                 Hebrews 3:13

ii) It hardens the heart                   Hebrews 3:13

iii) It makes the heart rebel           Hebrews 3:16

b) Learn to fear the Lord

i) Fearing the wrath of God           Hebrews 3:10-11

ii) Fearing His judgment                Hebrews 3:11, 16-19

c) Responding to the Lord

i) The ministry of the Spirit             Hebrews 3:7

ii) The word of God                           Psalm 95:7-11 (cited)

d) Exhortation of each other           Hebrews 3:13

e) True Partakers of Christ              Hebrews 3:14

i) If we hold our confidence

ii) If we are steadfast to the end
