DO NOT BE AFRAID, ONLY BELIEVE

Jesus had returned from the Land of the Gadarenes,
There He freed a man who had been possessed by spirits unclean.
Crowds flocked around, gazing at Him with awe,
Who was this Man, whom many had come to adore?

Jairus loved his countrymen and thus served as a ruler of a synagogue,
He was aware that there were strong feelings against Jesus abroad.
But Jairus was also a man who had a tender father’s heart,
His daughter’s serious illness just about tore his soul apart.

He fell at the feet of Jesus, not caring what others might have said,
Who could understand how his heart felt, at the thought of his daughter lying sick in bed.
Would the Good Teacher come to his house without delay but with haste?
Would He lay His hands on her that she might not die, for that would be a waste!

Jesus responded immediately, understanding the fears that Jairus had,
How He wished that fear could be banished and the heart by faith, be made glad.
Jairus was filled with dread when Jesus stopped to talk to a woman who was ill,
But there was nothing he could do but bear with this delay, though it went against his will.

When he drew nearer home, his heart fluttered with great fear,
His ears heard loud noises, people wailing, and many shedding tears.
His heart sank as he listened to the news he feared the most,v
His daughter was no more, she had given up the ghost.

How his heart must have broke, as the news sank in,
He felt virtually nothing, his heart was now hollow within.
His beloved daughter was all he lived for but she was no longer there,
His life was empty, his mind was numb, his heart was now bare.

Jesus drew alongside and gently said these words with confidence and strength.
“Do not be afraid, only believe!” Jesus would come through for him in the end.
Jesus spoke to the little girl with the tenderest and most loving voice,
The little girl responded, her eyes sparkled and Jairus’ believing heart rejoiced.

She was not dead, Jesus had given her a new lease of life,
Jairus now believed but he knew he would have to face much strife.
He now stood with Jesus who had raised his daughter from the dead,
He found new strength and courage to defend his faith, without any fear or dread.
