THE TEMPTATION OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST I

1. Why did Jesus have to be tempted/tested?

a) Part and parcel of His incarnation (being made man)           Hebrews 2:9-18; John 1:14
i) To be made like His brethren           Hebrews 2:14
ii) To be made perfect through suffering           Hebrews 2:10
iii) To battle and defeat the Devil           Hebrews 2:14-15
b) Part of His ministry as High Priest
i) That He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest           Hebrews 2:17
ii) That He, having suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted
iii) He was in all points tested as we are, yet without sin           Hebrews 4:15

2. Why the Devil had to be given the chance to test Jesus

a) He had caused the first Adam          Genesis 3
b) He now focuses on attempting to make Jesus, the Second Adam to fall as well

a) The first Adam
i) Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin           Romans 5:12

i) By One Man, Jesus Christ, grace abounded to many           Romans 5:15
