The Baptism of Jesus

1. Jesus came to be baptized by John           Matthew 3:13

2. John tried to prevent this           Matthew 3:14

a) I need to be baptised by you
b) Are you coming to me?

3. Jesus’ word to John

a) Permit it to be so now           Matthew 3:15a
b) For thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness           Matthew 3:15b
c) John accepted the explanation of Jesus           Matthew 3:15c

4. At the baptism of Jesus

a) The heavens opened           Matthew 3:16b
b) The Spirit of God descending upon Jesus like dove alighting upon Him           Matthew 3:16c
c) A voice from heaven           Matthew 3:17a
i) This is My beloved Son           Matthew 3:17b
ii) In whom I am well-pleased           Matthew 3:17b

5. The significance of the baptism of Jesus

a) Not for repentance of sin! (“without sin”          Hebrews 4:15)
b) The pivotal phrase “My beloved Son”
i) Sonship with reference to His priesthood           Hebrews 5:5
ii) A priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek           Hebrews 5:6
iii) He began this priestly ministry in the days of His flesh           Hebrews 5:7a
iv) He offered up prayers and supplications           Hebrews 5:7b
v) Son of God- Yet He had to learn obedience           Hebrews 5:8
vi) Having been perfected He became the author of eternal salvation           Hebrews 5:9
vii) Called by God as High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek           Hebrews 5:10

6. The testimony of John

God informed John that he would be able to identify Jesus when he saw the dove descending on Him           John 1:33-34
