Jesus' Message at the Synagogue of Nazareth

A. JESUS’ MESSAGE AT THE SYNAGOGUE OF NAZARETH

1. Anticipating the reaction of the congregation
a) Physician, heal yourself          Luke 4:23
b) Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country          Luke 4:23
2. Answering objections
a) Assuredly, I say to you          Luke 4:24

This will become a characteristic trademark of the sayings of Jesus

b) No prophet is accepted in his own country          Luke 4:24
c) Making reference to ancient and Biblical history
i) Reference to the days of Elijah          Luke 4:25
ii) Famine in those days          Luke 4:25
iii) Drought for three years          Luke 4:25
iv) Elijah sent to Zarephath in Sidon          Luke 4:26
v) Reference to the days of Elisha          Luke 4:27
vi) Naaman the Syrian was healed          Luke 4:27
3. Response of the congregation
a) The people were filled with wrath          Luke 4:28
b) They rose up and thrust Him out of the city          Luke 4:29
c) They led Jesus to the brow of the hill on which the city was built          Luke 4:29
d) They intended to throw Him down the cliff          Luke 4:29
4. Divine Intervention
a) Jesus passed through the angry mob
b) He went His way
c) God prevented anyone from harming the Lord Jesus
d) His hour had not yet come
e) God would watch over His beloved Son protectively
