THE DEMISE OF MOSES FORETOLD

1. Moses may see the land which God has promised to Israel

2. Mountain top (Different names)

a) Mount Abarim   (Numbers 27:12)
b) Mount Nebo   (Deuteronomy 32:49)

3. He will be “gathered to your people”

a) Euphemism
b) Reference to death

4. Reason

a) Moses rebelled   (Numbers 27:14)
b) He did not hallow God’s name   (Numbers 27:14)

MOSES’ PRAYER TO THE LORD

1. Addressing the Lord

“The LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh”

2. Prayer

a) Set a man over the congregation
b) Who may go out before them and go in before them
c) Who may lead them out and bring them in
d) That the congregation of the LORD may not be like sheep which have no shepherd   (Numbers 27:17)

THE LORD’S ANSWER

1. Joshua identified   (Numbers 27:18)

2. Appointment of Joshua   (Numbers 27:18-21)

a) Description of Joshua
A man in whom is the Spirit   (Numbers 27:18)
b) Anointing
Lay your hand on him   (Numbers 27:19)
c) Inauguration
i) Joshua is to be presented to Eleazar the priest   (Numbers 27:19)
ii) Before all the congregation of Israel   (Numbers 27:19)
d) Authority
i) He is to be given authority   (Numbers 27:20)
ii) Israel is to be obedient to him
iii) At his word Israel will go out or come in   (Numbers 27:21)
e) In consultation with Eleazar
i) Seeking of God’s will
ii) Eleazar is to inquire on his behalf
iii) Using the Urim   (Numbers 27:21)

JOSHUA INAUGURATED

1. Moses did all that God commanded him   (Numbers 27:22)

2. Joshua was set before Eleazar and the congregation   (Numbers 27:22)

3. He laid his hands on him

4. He inaugurated Joshua as the next leader of Israel   (Numbers 27:23)
