THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

1. Word of Warning to Aaron

a) He is not allowed to come to the Holy Place inside the Veil   (Leviticus 16:2)
b) It is the Holy of Holies
c) “At just any time”   (Leviticus 16:2)

2. Approaching the Holy of Holies

a) The presentation of a sin offering   (Leviticus 16:3)
i) Bull
ii) Ram
b) Ceremonially washed clean   (Leviticus 16:5)
c) Properly garbed   (holy garments)
i) Holy linen   (Leviticus 16:4)
ii) Linen trousers
iii) Linen sash
iv) Turban
d) Offerings   (Leviticus 16:17)
i) For himself   (Leviticus 16:6, 11)
ii) For his house   (Leviticus 16:6)
iii) For the children of Israel   (Leviticus 16:15-16)

THE SYMBOL OF THE SCAPEGOAT

1. Two goats presented

2. One will be offered

3. The other is called the scapegoat

a) Confession of sin is made   (Leviticus 16:21)
b) The goat is released into the wilderness   (Leviticus 16:22)

THE SYMBOL OF BLOOD

1. Blood of the animal offered   (Leviticus 16:14)

2. Blood to be sprinkled on the mercy seat   (Leviticus 16:14)

NO ONE TO BE IN THE HOLY OF HOLIES

1. Only the High Priest on the Day of Atonement

2. Strict orders

AFTER THE DAY OF ATONEMENT SERVICE

1. The holy garments are to be left behind   (Leviticus 16:23)

2. Ceremonial cleansing   (Leviticus 16:24)

3. Sin offering to be offered   (Leviticus 16:25)

4. The person who released the scape goat to be cleansed   (Leviticus 16:26)

DATE OF THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

1. 10th Day, 7th Month   (Leviticus 16:29)

2. Day of affliction of soul   (Leviticus 16:30)

3. No work to be done on this day   (Leviticus 16:31)

4. A Sabbath of holy rest   (Leviticus 16:31)

5. Priestly duties   (Leviticus 16:32-34)

6. An everlasting statute   (Leviticus 16:34)
