Dear Parents,

A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS
We are introduced to a contributor to the Book of Proverbs.

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance.
This man declared to Ithiel – to Ithiel and Ucal.

Proverbs 30:1

1. Who is Agur?

a) Little is known about him apart from this text!

b) He is probably a sage known to Solomon.

2. What is the significance of this contribution?

The significance lies in the contents, rather than the reputation of the author!

A SPECIAL WAY OF WRITING
Agur writes in a very humble manner. His manner of writing teaches us much.

Surely I am more stupid than any man,
And do not have the understanding of a man.
I neither learned wisdom
Nor have knowledge of the Holy One.

Proverbs 30:2-3

1. ” I am more stupid than any man”

a) This phrase is not to be taken in a wooden literal manner.

b) The author is merely disclaiming the possession of great wisdom even as he writes.

2. “And do not have the understanding of a man”

a) Again, this phrase must not be taken too literally.

b) He is simply saying that he is just an ordinary person… and he would not compare his knowledge with other men.

3. “I neither learned wisdom nor have the knowledge of the Holy One”

a) He is disclaiming formal training in theology.

b) He fears that his knowledge of God is rather limited.

The wisdom of Agur is obvious and undisputable!
