Surety of a Better Covenant

THE OLD COVENANT

1. The Levitical Priesthood   (Hebrews 7:11)

2. The people received the law   (Hebrews 7:11)

a) The priests were the teachers
b) They taught the people the laws of God
c) They received the tithe from the people   (Hebrews 7:5 )

THE NEW COVENANT

1. The Melchizedek priesthood   (Hebrews 7:11)

2. The priesthood was changed   (Hebrews 7:12)

3. There was a change in the law   (Hebrews 7:12)

THE SUPERIORITY OF THE MELCHIZEDEK PRIESTHOOD

1. Melchizedek

a) King
i) Of Salem (Peace)
ii) Of righteousness
b) Priest of the Most High God
c) He met Abraham after his victory in war   (Hebrews 7:1)

2. Abraham

a) Patriarch
b) He gave Melchizedek a tenth part of all   (Hebrews 7:4)
c) The lesser is blessed by the greater   (Hebrews 7:7)

3. In the likeness of Melchizedek

a) Another priest has come   (Hebrews 7:15)
b) Not according to the old law   (Hebrews 7:16)
c) According to the power of endless life   (Hebrews 7:16)
d) In fulfilment of prophecy
“You are a priest forever
After the order of Melchizedek”   (Hebrews 7:17)

SIGNIFICANCE

1. The old former covenant (the law)

a) Weakness
b) Unprofitableness
c) Made nothing perfect   (Hebrews 7:18)

2. The new covenant

a) A better hope
b) Though which we draw nearer to God   (Hebrews 7:19)

3. Confirmed by an oath

a) The LORD has sworn,
He will not relent   (Hebrews 7:21) (Psalm 110:4)
b) Jesus has become the surety of a better covenant   (Hebrews 7:22)

4. Our High Priest

a) Holy
b) Harmless
c) Higher than the heavens   (Hebrews 7:26)
