THE GREAT COMMANDMENT

(Matthew 22:34-40)

1. Question of the Pharisees

“Which is the Great Commandment in the Law?”   Matthew 22:34

2. Answer of the Lord Jesus

a) Love- The first Great Commandment
“To love the Lord God with all the heart, soul and mind”   Matthew 22:37
b) Love- The second is like the first
“You shall love the neighbour as yourself”   Matthew 22:39
c) Love- “Upon this principle of Love hang all The Law and the Prophets”   Matthew 22:40

LOVE IS THE FULFILMENT OF THE LAW

(Romans 13:8-10)

1. He who loves has fulfilled the law (Romans 13:8)

2. Summary of the Law

“You shall love your neighbour as yourself”   Romans 13:9

3. Love is the fulfilment of the Law (Romans 13:10)

THE EXTOLLING OF THE VIRTUES OF LOVE

(1 Corinthians 13)

1. The Greatest of all spiritual gifts

a) Greater than faith
b) Greater than knowledge
c) Greater than supernatural gifts

2. The Challenge to cultivate and practise the many elements of Love:-

(1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
a) It suffers long
b) It is kind
c) It does not envy
d) It does not parade itself
e) It is not puffed up
f) It does not behave rudely
g) It does not seek its own
h) It is not provoked
i) It thinks no evil
j) It does not rejoice in iniquity
k) It rejoice in the truth
l) It bears all things
m) Believes all things
n) Hopes all things
o) Endures all things
p) Love never fails
“And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”   1 Corinthians 13:13
