My Soul Thirst For God

WHAT IS SOUL-THIRST?

1. It is like physical thirst

2. It is a spiritual thirst for God

3. Indications of a Soul-Thirst

a) There is a longing for the living God   Psalm 42:2
b) There is a desire to appear before God   Psalm 42:2

CONDITIONS THAT MAY CREATE THIS SOUL-THIRST

1. Taunts from enemies “Where is your God?”   Psalm 42:3

2. Tears that come from distress

a) Tears become food day and night   Psalm 42:3
b) Copious tears that come unbidden

3. Terrifying sense of feeling cast down and disquieted   Psalm 42:5

a) Sense of sorrowful mourning   Psalm 42:9
b) Sense of being forgotten by God   Psalm 42:9
c) Sense of being overwhelmed by enemies   Psalm 42:10

OVERCOMING FEELINGS OF DESPAIR

1. Pouring out our hearts to the Lord   Psalm 42:4

2. Remembering the past

a) Of going to the House of God for worship
b) Of being with the multitudes
c) Of pilgrim feasts
d) Of voices of joy and praise

3. Remembering God and His creation

a) In the land of the Jordan   Psalm 42:6
b) From the heights of Hermon   Psalm 42:6
c) From the hill Mizar   Psalm 42:6
d) The sea   Psalm 42:7

4. Addressing the soul firmly

a) Why are you cast down, O my soul?   Psalm 42:5
b) And why are you disquieted within me?   Psalm 42:5

5. Hoping in God

a) I shall yet praise Him   Psalm 42:6, 11
b) For the help of His countenance   Psalm 42:6
c) His lovingkindness   Psalm 42:8
d) His song in the night   Psalm 42:8
