His Seed Remains in Him

THE USE OF THE WORD “SEED”

Two significant uses may be noted:-

1. Abraham’s Seed

“Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made.
He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one,
‘And to your Seed’ who is Christ.”   Galatians 3:16 (Genesis 12:7; 13:15)
“And if you are Christ’s then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”   Galatians 3:29
a) That Seed was the Lord Jesus Christ
b) We are also considered “seed” if we belong to the Lord Jesus
c) We are heirs accordingly

2. Divine Seed

“Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.”   1 John 3:9
a) When a person is “born of God”
i) He is “born again”   (John 3:3)
ii) He is given a divine seed   (1 John 3:9)
iii) This seed will remain in him   (1 John 3:9)
b) Significant features
i) We are called “children of God”   (1 John 3:1)
ii) We shall be like the Lord Jesus   (1 John 3:2)
iii) We have a desire to be pure like Him   (1 John 3:3)
iv) Christ was manifested to take away our sin   (1 John 3:5)
v) The believer desires to abide in Christ   (1 John 3:6)
vi) He practises righteousness   (1 John 3:7)

3. An important Contrast to take note of

a) The person who continues in sin is of the evil one   (1 John 3:8)
b) He practises unrighteousness   (1 John 3:10)

A CHALLENGE TO CULTIVATE THE DIVINE SEED

1. Cultivation of love   (1 John 3:14)

a) Love for the brethren   (1 John 3:16)
b) Love in practical ways   (1 John 3:17)

2. Cultivation of our lives

a) Our Faith
b) Our heart
c) Our prayer life
