THE ERA OF THE KINGS

1. Saul, the first king of Israel

a) Saul was given every chance to succeed as king
i) He was instructed by Samuel
ii) He was given 2 special experiences of the Holy Spirit
iii) He was like the prophets, able to prophesy   (1 Samuel 10, 19)
b) But Saul chose the wrong path
i) He chose disobedience/ rebellion   (1 Samuel 15:22)
ii) He rejected the Word given to him   (1 Samuel 15:23)
iii) God rejected him from being king   (1 Samuel 15:23)
c) The Dynasty of Saul
i) He did not establish a dynasty
ii) He and his three sons died in battle   (1 Samuel 31:8)
iii) The Philistines beheaded him   (1 Samuel 31:8-10)

2. David was found to replace King Saul

a) Sought
“The LORD has sought for Himself
A man after His own heart”   1 Samuel 13:14
b) Provided
“I have provided Myself a king”   1 Samuel 16:1
c) To Anoint
“You shall anoint for Me the one
I name to you”   1 Samuel 16:3
d) Arise, Anoint
“Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”   1 Samuel 16:12

ENSURING SUCCESS WITH WONDERFUL DIVINE PROMISES

1. God’s Word to Samuel

a) Samuel was God’s “holy one”   (Psalm 89:19a)

b) Instructions to Samuel   (1 Samuel 13-16)

2. Features of what God said to Samuel

These were promises God would give to David to ensure success

a) Help
“I have given help to one who is mighty”   Psalm 89:19b
b) Chosen
“I have exalted one chosen from the people”   Psalm 89:19c
c) Anointed
“I have found My servant David;
With My holy oil I have anointed him”   Psalm 89:20
d) Established
“With whom My hand shall be established”   Psalm 89:21a
e) Strength
“Also My arm shall strengthen him”   Psalm 89:21b
f) Protection from Enemies
“The enemy shall not outwit him”   Psalm 89:22a
g) Faithfulness and Mercy
“But My faithfulness and My mercy
Shall be with him”   Psalm 89:24
