THE PROBLEM OF BEING IN BONDAGE

1. In bondage to a wrong understanding of religion

“They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, “You will be made free?”   John 8:33

2. In bondage to sin

“Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave to sin.”   John 8:34

THE LORD JESUS’ PROMISE TO SET US FREE

1. The truth can set you free

“And you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”   John 8:32

2. The Son can set you free

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”   John 8:36

THE PATH TO SPIRITUAL FREEDOM

1. Receiving the Lord Jesus and His word

a. Receiving the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord
b. Having faith in the Lord Jesus   (John 1:12)
i. Believing in His word
ii. Believing in His name
iii. Given the right to be children of God

2. Remaining in His word

“If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed.”   John 8:31
a. The issue is not just believing in His word
b. It is continuing and remaining in His word too

3. Realising the light of the truth of God’s word

“And you shall know the truth…”   John 8:32

THE PERSON WHO ATTAINS SPIRITUAL FREEDOM

“And the truth shall make you free.”   John 8:32

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”   John 8:36

1. Light will always overcome darkness

2. Grace and truth will set us free

3. We are freed to become children of God
