“NOW THEREFORE, ARISE”

 

(I) THE DEATH OF MOSES

1. An event that was nationally mourned for thirty days (Deuteronomy 34:8)

2. There was deep weeping and mourning (Deuteronomy 34:8)

3. A fitting Eulogy

“But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face…” Deuteronomy 34:10

 

(II) THE RISE OF ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT LEADER

1. Challenge given to Joshua

“Now therefore, arise…” Joshua 1:2

a) Given by God

b) Formal assumption of the role as the one who will lead the nation of Israel


2. Call of Joshua

a) Initiated by God Himself

“Call Joshua …” Deuteronomy 31:14

b) Presentation of Joshua

“And present yourselves in the tabernacle of meeting…” Deuteronomy 31:14

c) Inauguration of Joshua

“That I may inaugurate him…” Deuteronomy 31:14

“Then he inaugurated Joshua the son of Nun…” Deuteronomy 31:23

d) The laying on of hands on Joshua

“Moses had laid his hands on him…” Deuteronomy 34:9

e) God’s acceptance of Joshua

“So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of meeting.

Now the LORD appeared at the tabernacle in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood above the door of the tabernacle.” Deuteronomy 31:14-15
