ABRAHAM’S FAITH
Each person cited in Hebrews 11 has his own special feature of faith that was commended. Faith has many features that are outstanding. The faith of Abraham is worth studying carefully.
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;
10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Hebrews 11:8-10
- By faith Abraham obeyed
a) Obedience to the Lord is a feature of faith
b) God had called Abraham to go to a land he did not know
c) Abraham was able to obey
i) Despite a lack of full knowledge of the country promised to him as an inheritance
ii) It would take a significant faith to see such obedience
- By faith he dwelt in the land of promise
a) Abraham arrived in the land of Canaan
b) It was given to him by God’s word of promise
c) Abraham settled in the land but to him, it was foreign
3. By faith Abraham saw beyond the land of Canaan
a) He saw a city which has foundations
b) The builder and maker of that city was God Himself
c) That city is in heaven
d) Abraham’s faith enabled him to see beyond life on earth
THE REALITY OF OUR FAITH
What is the real state of our faith in the Lord? Let us examine our faith comparing it with that of Abraham’s.
- Is obedience to God a feature of our faith?
- Can we see beyond life on earth?
- Do we have a strong hope in eternal life in heaven?
