THE EPISTLES OF PETER
The Lord communicated His word in a number of ways. One of them was through His Apostles. The Apostle Peter wrote a second epistle to his readers to remind them of the Word of God.
1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),
2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. 2 Peter 3:1-2
- “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle”
a) Each epistle was written to “beloved” brethren
b) They were fellow-believers who shared a common faith
c) The first epistle was written to encourage all who were suffering
d) The second epistle was written to help the brethren fend off false teachers
- “In both ofwhich I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder”
a) Peter wrote “reminders” to his readers
b) To “stir up”:
i) To awaken
ii) To become alert
c) “Pure Minds”
i) Sincere minds
ii) The mind needs to be fed the word of God
THE WORD OF GOD
Two specific sets of servants of God were highlighted:
- “The words which were spoken before by the holy prophets”
a) The prophets of God were sent with divine messages
b) Their words came from the Lord
- “And of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Saviour”
a) The Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ
b) Their words were to be regarded as “commandments”
OUR CHALLENGE
Let us consider how we can build up our faith till it becomes strong and steady.
- Let us take heed of the words of the holy prophets of God
- Let us also take heed of the words of the apostles of the Lord Jesus
- May we give proper heed to the word of God they taught!
