THE TESTIMONY OF THE PSALMIST
The Psalmist who wrote Psalm 119 preferred anonymity. In this skilfully-written Psalm, he shares openly why he meditated on the Lord’s word.
- It began with a Discovery of the value of God’s word
a) There was a time when the Lord’s word was not a part of his life (Ps. 119:1-8)
b) Then came a Commencement of his journey of life where he meditated on the Lord’s word (Ps. 119:15)
c) He Discovered that the word had Cleansing power (Ps. 119:9)
- He Determined that he would Delight in God’s word
a) This was clearly expressed as a Desire (Ps. 119:16)
b) This was expressed again (Ps. 119:47)
THINGS DISCOVERED ALONG THE WAY
There were a number of things that were discovered that motivated the Psalmist further to meditate on the Lord’s word.
- This is a short list of things from Psalm 119:41-48
a) The mercies of God
b) The salvation that He gives
c) Hope was also found
d) There was a sense of exhilaration when he discovered “liberty”
- A significant response to all the lessons learned
a) The Psalmist learned to love the Lord’s word
b) This love grew further as he meditated
“And I will delight myself in Your commandments which I love” Psalm 119:47
MEDITATION BECAUSE OF A LOVE FOR GOD’S WORD
The Psalmist concluded this stanza (Psalm 119:41-48) with this declaration.
My hands also I will lift up
To Your commandments which I love,
And I will meditate on Your statutes. Psalm 119:48
- The lifting up of the hands
a) A symbol of prayer
b) It could represent
i) Petition (supplication)
ii) Praise
- The Commandments of God
a) There was now a real love for God’s word
b) True delight is found in the knowledge of the law
- Meditation on God’s statutes
a) This was discovered 119:15
b) It was then developed 119:23, 27
c) There came delight Psalm 119:47
These things helped the Psalmist cultivate a great love for the word of God!
