THE INHERITANCE OF THE SAINTS
Text: Colossians 1
13 December 2020
THE DOCTRINE OF BEING HEIRS OF GOD
This doctrine was well-taught by the Apostle Paul. He wrote about this in a number of his epistles. In Colossians, Paul mentioned this doctrine again.
9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;
12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14
IN THE CONTEXT OF PRAYER
Paul wrote about this doctrine in the context of prayer, and rightly so! Our inheritance is best comprehended in prayer.
- The salvation experience of the Colossians
a) It was essentially the same experience common to all believers
b) True salvation has the following features:
i) Faith in Christ
ii) Love for the saints
iii) Hope that is laid up in heaven Colossians 1:4-5
- Prayer for the Colossians
a) To be filled with knowledge of God’s will
i) In all wisdom
ii) In spiritual understanding
b) To walk worthy of the Lord
c) Fruitful in every good work
d) Increasing in the knowledge of God
e) Strengthened with all might
QUALIFIED TO BE HEIRS OF GOD
Many of us feel absolutely unworthy of being made heirs of God! How was this made possible?
- It is God the Father
a) Who has qualified us to be partakers of a special inheritance
b) This inheritance was given to all the saints Colossians 1:12
- How has God done this?
a) He has delivered us from the power of darkness
b) He has conveyed us into the kingdom of His Son Colossians 1:13
APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
Let us take time to read and ponder Colossians 1 prayerfully.
- Giving thanks
Let us be filled with deep gratitude to God
- Prayer
Let us never cease to pray that God would enlighten us further
- Walking worthy
Let us walk worthy of God’s calling to us to become joint heirs with Christ Jesus the Lord! May our life reflect the wondrous salvation God has given to us!
