I WILL DECLARE YOUR NAME TO MY BRETHREN

Text: Psalm 22:22
10 December 2017

THE SON OF GOD

The Lord Jesus took on flesh and was truly Emmanuel! He manifested what God was like! Three things may be highlighted!

  1. Full of grace
  2. Full of truth
  3. Full of love and compassion

THE SON OF MAN

When Jesus became The Son of Man, He identified with us completely. Psalm 22 added a special perspective.

I will declare Your name to My brethren;

In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.     Psalm 22:25

When we read this Messianic reference, it changes the way we read the Gospels about the ministry of the Lord Jesus when He ministered in the synagogues!

  1. The Gospel writers noted that Jesus would go to the synagogues

a) He entered into the synagogue again     Mark 3:1

b) When the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue     Mark 6:2

  1. The fulfilment of the Messianic Scriptures

a) The prophecy was that the Messiah would speak of God “in the midst of the assembly”

b) The synagogue was the regular assembly that the Jews would go to on a Sabbath

c) Jesus was actually fulfilling this Messianic reference

  1. What did Jesus do when He was teaching in the synagogues?

a) He was declaring the name of God

b) He was speaking of faith in God

c) He was seeking to draw people to the Lord

d) He sought to speak in praise of His Father

  1. How did Jesus see the people in the synagogue?

a) He saw them as “brethren”

b) There are a number of ways in which this word may be understood. Two may be highlighted: –

c) He was speaking as an Israelite to the children of Israel

d) He was speaking to people who had come to faith in God and they were therefore truly “brethren”

APPROPRIATE RESPONSE

Let us thank God for the love that the Lord Jesus has for all who believe in Him. Graciously, He calls us “brethren!” Let us rejoice in this great truth!
