THE CITY OF CORINTH

The ancient city of Corinth boasted many things. Originally, it was ruled by Alexander the Great. Corinth was conquered by the Romans in later years. It was a major center for many things:-

  1. Commerce
  2. Culture
  3. Religion

MANY NOTABLE PEOPLE

Corinth had a long history. It was a major Greek city. The sense of pride continued to affect many, even in the days of the Apostle Paul. There were many who took pride in having a noble and rich ancestry!

BELIEVERS WERE ADVERSELY AFFECTED

Some believers were affected because they came from very humble backgrounds. Paul had this to say to them.

For you see your calling, brethren,

That not many wise according to the flesh,

Not many mighty, not many noble are called.

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world

to put to shame the wise,

And God has chosen the weak things of the world

The things which are mighty;

And the base things of the world and the things which are despised

God has chosen, and the things which are not,

To bring to nothing the things that are,

That no flesh should glory in His presence.                            1 Corinthians 1:26-29

  1. The things admired by the world

a) The wise

b) The noble

c) The mighty

  1. The things God has chosen

a) The foolish

b) The weak

c) The base

WHY DID GOD CHOOSE AS HE DID?

A number of reasons may be cited as to why God chose as He did!

  1. To put to shame the people who think so highly of themselves

a) For all their advantages, they did not possess spiritual wisdom

b) They could not understand faith and salvation

  1. That no one should glory in His presence

a) They have nothing to glory in

b) At the end of life, they will be separated from the Presence of God forever

Let us rejoice that the Lord has called and chosen us to be His own People, a People near to Him!
