Text: 2 Corinthians 1

THE REALITY OF GOD COMING ALONGSIDE US AND COMFORTING US

“Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation…”   2 Corinthians 1:3-4a

1. He will come alongside us to help us.

2. He can comfort us in all our tribulations

a. He is a God of all comfort.
b. There is no situation that He cannot help and comfort us.

3. He can continually comfort us.

4. There can be the receiving of God’s comfort.

a. We can receive this comfort from the Lord.
b. There is the reality of God comforting us.

ONE REASON BEHIND GOD’S COMFORTING US – TO COMFORT OTHERS

“That we may be able to comfort those in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”   2 Corinthians 1:4

1. When the Lord God comforts us, there are different reasons.

2. Paul highlighted one reason behind it.

3. When we are comforted by God, we can comfort others.

4. What we have experienced in terms of the Lord’s comfort, can now comfort others.

5. We can use the same comfort to comfort others.

THE RICHNESS OF LESSONS LEARNT ABOUT COMFORT CAN HELP US ENDURE

“Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer.”   2 Corinthians 1:6

1. Paul wrote of going through many afflictions.

2. There would be lessons learnt about comfort along the way.

3. These lessons can help us to press on

a. They can strengthen our faith.
b. God becomes more real as we experience this comfort
c. We can identify with people’s problems.
d. These lessons can work in and through us.

THE RESPONSE OF FAITH IN THIS GOD OF ALL COMFORT

1. Having faith as an underlining feature

a. Before we can find comfort from the Lord, we need faith as a foundation.
b. Faith must be an underlining factor.
i. We can have faith in God as our Father
ii. We can have faith in God as the God of all mercies

2. Faith to turn to God for comfort

3. Being a source of comfort to others

4. Learning to endure – Lessons learnt can strengthen our faith
