“FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD, HE IS GOD”


(I) THE RECOGNITION OF THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

“For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and earth beneath…” Joshua 2:11

1. God revealing to individuals like Rahab the extent of His sovereignty

a) God was not just meant for Israel

b) God was meant for the whole world


2. God establishing His servant against opposition (Joshua 1:5)


3. God putting His fear in the hearts of men

a) Fear and dread will fall on the people (Exodus 15:16)

b) Sending His fear before Israel (Exodus 23:27)

c) Trembling and anguish because of Israel (Deuteronomy 2:25)


(II) THE REALISATION OF THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

“For the Lord your God, He is God….” Joshua 2:11

1. Through hearing the powerful works of the Lord (Joshua 2:10)

a) The opening of the Red Sea

b) The destruction of King Sihon and Og


2. Through experiencing the fear of the Lord (Joshua 2:8, 11)

a) The terror of the Lord falling on the people

b) Fainthearted / hearts melted

c) No more courage


3. Through knowing the Lord personally as a sovereign God (Joshua 2:8, 10)

a) Having Spiritual cognition

b) Knowing that the Lord had given the Land to Israel

c) Seeing the Lord is God

 

(III) THE RESPONSE OF FEARING A SOVEREIGN GOD

1. Acts of faith

a) Receiving spies with peace (Hebrews 11:31)

b) Doing the work of the Lord (James 2:25)


2. Application of faith in the Lord

a) Making an oath by the name of the Lord (Joshua 2:12)

b) Seeking to save her loved ones (Joshua 2:12-13)

 

(IV) REINFORCING OUR FAITH IN OUR SOVEREIGN GOD

1. Absolute faith in God’s sovereignty and deliverance (Joshua 2:24)


2. Active faith

a) In reaching out to loved ones (Joshua 2:12)

b) In helping others (Joshua 2)
