FATHER, GLORIFY YOUR NAME

(I) THE LORD JESUS’ CONSCIOUSNESS OF GLORIFYING THE FATHER

1. The Lord Jesus sought it

“He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him” John 7:18

2. The Lord Jesus taught it

“…For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever…” Matthew 6:13

3. The Lord Jesus prayed about it

“Father, glorify Your name…” John 12:28

(II) THE LORD JESUS’ COMMITMENT TO GLORIFYING THE FATHER

1. The context of suffering

“…The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.” John 12:23

2. The voicing of His human struggle

“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour?’…” John 12:27

3. The vital re-focusing on His God given purpose

“…But for this purpose I came to this hour.” John 12:27

4. The spontaneous prayer of Jesus

“Father, glorify Your name…” John 12:28

(III) THE REPLY OF THE FATHER TO THE LORD JESUS’ PRAYER

1. Immediate response

a) The Father’s approval

“…Then a voice came from heaven saying, ‘I have both glorified it…’ ” John 12:28

b) The Father’s commitment to glorify His own name

“…and will glorify it again.” John 12:28

c) The Lord Jesus’ explanation of the voice of God

“…This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.” John 12:30

2. Result

“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth will draw all peoples to Myself.” John 12:32

(IV) THE CHALLENGE TO FOLLOW THE LORD’S EXAMPLE

1. Being conscious of glorifying the Father

2. Being committed to glorifying the Father

a) Learning to overcome our struggles

b) Learning to focus on God’s purposes for our lives

3. Praying that God’s name be glorified always

4. Seeking the Father’s approval
