"This they shall have for their pride"

Text: Zephaniah 2:10

THE PRIDE OF MOAB AND AMMON

Pride is surely one of the worst sins that lead people into serious trouble with the Lord! The sin of pride is highlighted here.

“This they shall have for their pride,
Because they have reproached
and made arrogant threats
Against the people of the LORD of hosts.”
Zephaniah 2:10

1. “This they shall have”

a) This is a reference to the punishment to be meted out against Moab and Ammon.
b) This judgment was mentioned in Zephaniah 2:9.
c) Their countries would be reduced to:
i) Ground over-run by weeds.
ii) Salt-pits.
iii) A perpetual desolation.

2. “For their pride”

a) The Moabites and Ammonites were proud people.
b) They were arrogant in their attitude and behavior to Israel.

3. Two activities were highlighted:

a) They reproached Israel.
b) They made arrogant threats:
i) Abusive language
ii) Threatening gestures
iii) Intimidation
iv) Actual assaults
c) These actions stemmed from their pride (arrogance).

4. “Against the people of the LORD of hosts”

a) Moab and Ammon had not regarded the fact that the LORD of hosts was the God of Israel.
b) They knew that Israel was indeed “the people of God”.
c) But they still despised and reviled Israel.
d) In so-doing they had sinned against the LORD of hosts! They were in fact insulting God Himself!
