Day 18

"Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth"

Text: Zephaniah 2:3

THE CALL TO SEEK THE LORD

This was a genuine and urgent call to the nation. Not all would respond appropriately. But some will respond because they were true-hearted. The true remnant would surely seek the Lord fervently.

“Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth,
Who have upheld His justice.
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
It may be that you will be hidden
In the day of the LORD’S anger.”
Zephaniah 2:3

1. “All you meek of the earth”

a) They are distinguished from the sinful ones.
b) They are people who upheld justice according to their sense of righteousness.
c) They are not to take their position for granted.
d) They must seek the LORD with appropriate reverence.

2. Three features of seeking God

a) “Seek the LORD”
i) For who He is.
ii) Not for the blessings He might bestow.
b) “Seek righteousness”
i) This should be a natural follow-through for those who are truly meek.
ii) The genuinely meek will seek righteousness.
c) “Seek humility”
i) This reflects the true character of the genuinely meek.
ii) They would always strive against the sin of pride in their life.
d) These features highlighted here reflect the teachings of the Lord Jesus (The Beatitude written in Matthew 5:3-10).

3. “It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’S anger”

a) Whom the Lord will spare on the day of judgment is not revealed.
b) But if the Lord were to decide to spare some, then the people most likely to be spared would be the meek of the earth.
c) The word “hidden”
i) Specially protected.
ii) Kept wonderfully by the mercy and power of the Lord God.
