"Behold, the LORD will cast her out"

Text: Zechariah 9:4

THE PROMINENCE OF TYRE

Tyre’s prominence in the ancient world was noted. The prophet Ezekiel was given a special word from the LORD concerning Tyre. God Himself will destroy arrogant Tyre. Zechariah had a similar word from God concerning Tyre.

“For Tyre built herself a tower,
Heaped up silver like the dust,
And gold like the mire of the streets.
Behold, the Lord will cast her out;
He will destroy her power in the sea,
And she will be devoured by fire.”
Zechariah 9:3-4

1. Tyre and Sidon

a) Though they were seen as “twin cities”,
b) Tyre was the more prominent one.
c) Sidon was mentioned too (Ezekiel 28:20-23).

2. The achievements of Tyre

a) Built herself a tower:
i) This speaks of a strong military defence.
ii) Tyre, though a small nation, was a mighty one.
b) Wealth of Tyre:
i) Silver was like common “dust”.
ii) Gold was like common “mud” in the streets.
iii) This caused Tyre to be arrogant (Ezekiel 28:1-19).
iv) Tyre fancified itself to be very wise (Ezekiel 28:3-4).

3. The LORD’s judgment

a) God would cast her out.
b) Her power in the sea would be destroyed.
c) Tyre would be destroyed by fire.
