"He shall build the temple of the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 6:13

DOUBLE ENTENDRE

Prophecy is always deep and profound. The layers of thought must be carefully studied and sorted out.

“Yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD.
He shall bear the glory,
And shall sit and rule on His throne;
So He shall be a priest on His throne,
And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”
Zechariah 6:13

1. “Yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD”

a) The immediate historical reference:

i) This text may be applied to Joshua the son of Jehozadak.
ii) He was anointed and assigned this task.
b) The prophetic significance

This would be a reference to the Messiah who would fulfil a greater work that only He can perform.

2. “He shall bear the glory”

a) The office of the High Priest comes with glory.
b) There is an even greater glory that the Messiah would be blessed with.

3. “And shall sit and rule on His throne”

a) Technically, there is no throne for the Old Testament high priest.
i) They have to stand and serve.
ii) Their work is never done completely (Hebrews 10:11).
b) The prophetic reference is to the Messianic High Priest.
i) He would be given a throne.
ii) He can sit after He has completed His work of providing atonement (Hebrews 10:12).
iii) He will also function as a ruler on the throne.

4. “He shall be a priest on His throne”

a) Power and authority were given to the high priest Joshua the son of Jehozadak.
b) However, the reference to “His throne” would fit better the Messianic High Priest.
i) He was anointed King (Psalm 2:6).
ii) He was also anointed High Priest (Psalm 110:4).
iii) He was addressed as “Lord” (Psalm 110:1).

5. “The counsel of peace shall be between them both”

a) The phrase “Between them both” would refer to two offices:
i) The office of Zerubbabel the governor.
ii) The office of Joshua the high priest.
b) Counsel would be given to both parties so that there would be peace and harmony.
c) The greater reference would be with reference to the Messiah:
He would be both Priest and King. He would also have an additional role as Prophet.
