"These are the two anointed ones"

Text: Zechariah 4:14

THE ANSWER OF THE TEACHING ANGEL

The teaching angel was most patient with Zechariah. He wanted to be sure that Zechariah had done everything possible to comprehend the Vision as it was given to him.

“Then he answered me and said,
‘Do you not know what these are?’
And I said, ‘No, my lord.’
So he said, ‘These are the two anointed ones,
who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.'”
Zechariah 4:13-14

1. Querying Zechariah

a) Did he really not know the meaning of the two olive trees?

b) The dripping of oil into the Lampstand would be the natural function of the olive trees.

i) They were not just standing there to add to the scene.

ii) They were standing there to fulfil a function.

iii) They would provide all that was necessary to keep the Lampstand burning all the time.

2. The explanation given

a) The immediate context would suggest two people who were already mentioned.

i) Zerubbabel the governor.

ii) Joshua the high priest.

b) Their role was to ensure that the Lampstand keep its light burning.

c) The Lampstand would represent the Temple ministry of giving light to the nation.

3. A veiled prophetic reference

a) It is possible that there was a veiled reference to the future.

b) Revelation 11:4 speaks of two olive trees too.

c) The veiled reference could not, of course, be understood by Zechariah.
