"A man with the measuring line"

Text: Zechariah 2:1

THE THIRD VISION

A third vision was given to Zechariah. This vision was connected in meaning to the earlier two visions.

“Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold,
a man with a measuring line in his hand.
So I said, ‘Where are you going?’
And he said to me, ‘To measure Jerusalem,
to see what is its width and what is its length.'”
Zechariah 2:1-2

1. “Then I raised my eyes and looked”

a) Zechariah had to do his part to carefully see.
b) The Lord’s part was to give the vision and his part was to notice the details.

2. “And behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand”

a) This was the picture of a surveyor at work.
b) This is the usual preliminary work that must be done before building a city.

3. Interaction of Zechariah

a) He was able to interact with the surveyor.
b) He knew what surveying work was.
c) He did not know where he was going with the surveying line.

4. The response of the surveyor

a) He was going to survey Jerusalem.
b) His task was to measure the length and breadth of the site of Jerusalem.

5. The significance of this vision

a) Jerusalem would be inhabited again.
b) It would be built up once more.
c) This was a vision of the future of Jerusalem.
