"Strike the Shepherd"

Text: Zechariah 13:7

PROPHECY ABOUT THE DEATH OF THE MESSIAH

The Good Shepherd of Zechariah 11 must be borne in mind. This text described what happened to the Good Shepherd who had broken His rod and His staff (Zechariah 11:7, 10).

“‘Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
Against the Man who is My Companion,’
Says the LORD of hosts.
‘Strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered;
Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.'”
Zechariah 13:7

1.”Says the LORD of hosts”

a) This prophetic word came from the LORD Himself.
b) He made His will known.

2. The Good Shepherd

a) He is addressed affectionately.
b) He is called “The Man who is My Companion”.
i) This fits what we know about the Lord Jesus when He put on flesh.
ii) He kept a strong and intimate relationship with the LORD God.
iii) He was in constant communion in prayer.

3. A painful prophetic word

a) The Shepherd would be struck.
b) This very word was cited by the Lord Jesus (Matthew 26:31).
i) Jesus was captured by His enemies.
ii) His disciples scattered.
iii) They were affectionately described as “little ones”.

4. The LORD’s hand

He was the One who both foreknew and foreordained this! This was all part of God’s profound redemptive plan.
